Day 18 - Devil's Punchbowl to Gleneden Beach

Where We Are Tonight:   Devils Lake State Park        Miles Hiked Today: 13.7 (22 km)

Miles Hiked Overall:  158.4 (254.9 km)

Today Pam returned with me and we are working on hiking the section north of where I hiked last week (Newport to North Bend) and south of where Pam and I stopped previously (Tillamook Bay).  Today we hiked 13.7 miles from Devil's Punchbowl to Gleneden Beach.

Only 2 miles of today was on the beach but it was really great because it was similar to the Camino in many ways. The OCT is still so new that many of the kinks have not been worked out ...there isn't good signage and the only info is in two (sometimes conflicting) books on the subject. Also, there are some areas that have not been incorporated into the OCT yet (private land) and so there are some spots that don't get connect. But today wasn't like that...there were lots of signs with arrows pointing us in the right direction (Yay! No guessing!) and when we had to walk on 101, there was an actual path along the side the road and not just risk your life on the shoulder of the highway.

It was also cool that we got to walk through a town (Depoe Bay) like on the Camino. We saw maybe 15 whales during the day! One very close up in a small bay.

The day had a perfect ending with a glorious sunset!
